Sarkkarai Pongal - this is a quick and easy dish for prasadam. And this Sarkkarai Pongal has also been an absolute favourite prasadam for many of us. The taste of this Sarkkarai Pongal, depend on the quality of the jaggery we use. I usually prefer pagu vellam for pongal and payasam dishes. The colour and taste of this jaggery vary from place to place. Some jaggery are dark brown while others are yellow or orange coloured jaggery. In this recipe, I have used the dark brown jaggery and it tastes so good. My husband bought me this dark brown jaggery (Kottayam Vellam) from Nanguneri. Now let's see some important tips for perfect Sarkkarai Pongal.

Onion Aval Upma - Poha (Flattened Rice) Upma with Onions - Quick Evening Tiffin

Onion aval upma - easy evening tiffin recipe within 15 minutes. Avals are a staple ingredient in my home and I frequently prepare many dishes like upma, payasam, pongal, puttu with aval.

The best thing about aval is that they are so easy to cook. For this onion aval upma, thin variety aval must be used. To make this recipe, you need 1 cup chopped onions and seasoned with  coconut, small onions, garlic and red chillies masala. If you have leftover small onion red coconut chutney in your refrigerator, then you can easily prepare this upma within 5 minutes. Feel free to add in some roasted groundnuts for the upma. I like the combination of aval and roasted ground nuts very much. Let's see how to prepare this Onion aval upma with step by step instructions.
