Onion aval upma - easy evening tiffin recipe within 15 minutes. Avals are a staple ingredient in my home and I frequently prepare many dishes like upma, payasam, pongal, puttu with aval.
The best thing about aval is that they are so easy to cook. For this onion aval upma, thin variety aval must be used. To make this recipe, you need 1 cup chopped onions and seasoned with coconut, small onions, garlic and red chillies masala. If you have leftover small onion red coconut chutney in your refrigerator, then you can easily prepare this upma within 5 minutes. Feel free to add in some roasted groundnuts for the upma. Onion Aval Upma - Poha (Flattened Rice) Upma with step by step photos
Take a wide bowl and add the thin aval. I have used thin red rice aval, you can also use thin white aval.
Take a small chutney jar and add the grated coconut, small onions, garlic cloves, soaked tamarind and red chillies.
Grind it coarsely with little water.
Heat coconut oil in a kadai and add the mustard and urid dal. Allow it to crackle well and add the chopped onions.
Wash the aval in water for 2 times and drain the water completely. If required squeeze the aval gently with your palm and keep it ready.
When the onions turn soft, add the ground coconut small onion paste and stir it well with the onions.

Ingredients
- 2 cups thin aval
- 1 big onion
- 1/2 cup grated coconut
- 6 small onions
- 5 garlic cloves
- small lemon sized tamarind
- 3 red chillies
- few curry leaves
- 2 tbsp roasted groundnuts
- 1/2 tsp mustard
- 1/2 tsp urid dal
- 3 tbsp coconut oil
- salt to taste
Cooking Directions
- Soak the tamarind for 10 minutes. Peel the onions and garlic cloves. Chop the big onion finely.
- Take a small chutney jar and add the grated coconut, small onions, garlic cloves, soaked tamarind and red chillies. Grind it coarsely with little water.
- Heat coconut oil in a kadai and add the mustard and urid dal. Allow it to crackle well and add the chopped onions.
- Saute them well for a few minutes. In the meantime, measure and add the thin aval in a bowl.
- Wash the aval in water for 2 times and drain the water completely. If required squeeze the aval gently with your palm and keep it ready.
- When the onions turn soft, add the ground coconut small onion paste and stir it well with the onions.
- Now add the soaked and squeezed aval and required salt. Stir it gently until the coconut masala fully incorporated with the aval.
- Finally, add the curry leaves and roasted ground nuts. Mix it well and turn off the heat. Serve it immediately along with a cup of coffee.
