Sarkkarai Pongal - this is a quick and easy dish for prasadam. And this Sarkkarai Pongal has also been an absolute favourite prasadam for many of us. The taste of this Sarkkarai Pongal, depend on the quality of the jaggery we use. I usually prefer pagu vellam for pongal and payasam dishes. The colour and taste of this jaggery vary from place to place. Some jaggery are dark brown while others are yellow or orange coloured jaggery. In this recipe, I have used the dark brown jaggery and it tastes so good. My husband bought me this dark brown jaggery (Kottayam Vellam) from Nanguneri. Now let's see some important tips for perfect Sarkkarai Pongal.


Samba Pacharisi Kozhukattai - Red Rice Sweet Dumplings

Samba Pacharisi Kozhukattai - prepared with red raw rice, jaggery and coconut. Anyone who wants a quick evening dessert without much effort should try this samba raw rice Kozhukattai. In our family, we call this kozhukattais as avarakkai kozhukattai because it looks like the vegetable avarakkai.


The first step is to grind the samba raw rice flour.This samba raw rice is a medium grain rice which is purple in colour and wider in size. It is common in Tirunelveli and can be used in a variety of dishes like kozhukattai, puttu, sarkkarai pongal and aapam. In Tirunelveli, for Pongal festival we cook this rice in the pot and then offered to the God. Compared to other varieties of raw rice, this samba raw rice has a mild sweetness in it. During shasti fasting days, we eat this cooked samba rice along with freshly grated coconuts and jaggery. Whenever we visit Tirunelveli, we buy this rice and prepare the flour. To prepare this flour, just sun dry the rice for a few hours and then grind it in your nearest flour mill. So easy to prepare the flour for this kozhukattai. This kozhukattai requires just 3 ingredients and you can cook this within 15 minutes. Now let's see how to prepare this kozhukattai with step by step instructions.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups samba raw rice flour
  • 1 cup grated jaggery
  • 3/4 cup grated coconut

Cooking Directions

  1. Take a wide bowl and add the samba raw rice flour. Grate the jaggery finely using a knife and grate the coconut without any brown part. Next, mix them well and add water little by little and prepare the dough.
  2. Now take small ball and prepare an oval shaped ball and then gently press it in the centre. You can also prepare small diamond shaped balls. Prepare the kozhukattais as shown in the picture.
  3. Grease the idly plate with oil and place the kozhukattais.Cook the kozhukattais on medium heat for 7 to 9 minutes and turn off the heat.Transfer the kozhukattai to the serving dish and serve it along with a few coconut slices.
