Sarkkarai Pongal - this is a quick and easy dish for prasadam. And this Sarkkarai Pongal has also been an absolute favourite prasadam for many of us. The taste of this Sarkkarai Pongal, depend on the quality of the jaggery we use. I usually prefer pagu vellam for pongal and payasam dishes. The colour and taste of this jaggery vary from place to place. Some jaggery are dark brown while others are yellow or orange coloured jaggery. In this recipe, I have used the dark brown jaggery and it tastes so good. My husband bought me this dark brown jaggery (Kottayam Vellam) from Nanguneri. Now let's see some important tips for perfect Sarkkarai Pongal.


Moong dal - Green gram sweet sundal




Moong dal/Green gram/Pasipayaru Sweet Sundal  This moong dal(green gram/pasipayaru) sweet sundal is prepared with just 3 ingredients within 15 minutes. My mom prepares this healthy moong dal sweet for Navarathiri poojas. Whole moong dals are simple and easy to cook for poojas. This moong dal sweet sundal is best suitable for kids to include iron, protein and fibre for them. One of the best method to cook them uniformly is we have to soak them for 6 hours. By allowing the dals to soak in plenty of water, gives the perfect texture for any dishes made with green moong dal. So follow the simple instructions and do try this easy and healthy Moong dal with jaggery and coconut for this Navarathiri poojas.

This moong dal(green gram/pasipayaru) sweet sundal is prepared with just 3 ingredients within 15 minutes. My mom prepares this healthy moong dal sweet sundal for Navarathiri poojas. Ingredients
  • 100 grams green moong dal
  • 1/4 cup grated coconut
  • 1/4 cup jaggery
  • 1 tbsp ghee
Cooking Directions

1. Wash and soak the moong dal for 4 to 6 hours.
2. After 4 hours, drain the water and add it to the pressure cooker. Add little water and pressure cook for 2 whistles.
3. Allow them to cool down. 
4. Heat a pan and add ghee. Fry the coconuts for few minutes and add the jaggery.
5. When it melts, add the cooked green grams and a few drops of ghee. Stir them for a few seconds and switch off the flame. Keep it in the heat for 10 minutes and transfer it to the serving bowl.


Moong dal/Green gram/Pasipayaru Sweet Sundal with step by step photos


1. Wash and soak the moong dal for 4 to 6 hours.After 4 hours, drain the water and add it to the pressure cooker. Add little water and pressure cook for 2 whistles.Allow them to cool down. 





2. Heat a pan and add ghee. Fry the coconuts for few minutes and add the jaggery.


3. When it melts, add the cooked green grams and a few drops of ghee. Stir them for a few seconds and switch off the flame. 


4. Keep it in the heat for 10 minutes and transfer it to the serving bowl.
