Crispy Capsicum Onion Pakoda - Quick Evening Snack Recipes

Capsicum onion pakoda  is an easy tea time snack made using onions, capsicum, besan flour, rice flour, chilli powder and garlic. When we were in the US, I frequently prepared these pakodas with tri-colored capsicums as a starter for potluck parties. This pakoda tastes yum with our meals also.  To make onion capsicum pakoda, you need to cut them uniformly. You need to cut the onions and capsicums into slightly thicker pieces. Discard all the seeds and the thin white layer in the capsicums and then slice them equally. After slicing the onions and capsicums you are left with just mixing the flour, chilly powder, crushed garlic and frying it until crispy and golden. Now let's see how to make this onion capsicum pakoda with step by step pictures.  Check out my other Evening Snacks Recipes Vazhaikkai (Plantain) Bajji  Cauliflower Fry    Nullikai urundai - Urid dal balls Kara Vadai -  Pattani Paruppu (Yellow Split Peas) Bonda Sabudana Vada -  Javarisi Va...

Roadside Mochai Masala - Tirunelveli Style Mochai Recipe

This is the popular street food recipe from Tirunelveli called mochai. A healthy semi dry gravy with mochai prepared in streetside pushcarts across many places in Tirunelveli and Tuticorin.  Until recently I never had a chance to taste this mochai but my husband tasted it many times during their school days. During last month's trip to Tirunelveli, we tasted this mochai masala near Murappanaadu river. It was delicious and my son asked me to prepare this mochai for his snack box. This roadside mochai masala is made with boiled mochai beans (Lima beans), lots of onions, ginger and  green chillies. As mochai beans have a slightly bitter taste, hence you have to use plenty of onions for this masala . You have to use dried mochai for this masala.  To spice up this masala you have to add a good amount of green chillies and ginger which gives a nice flavour and tastes yummy. This mochai masala makes a filling and comforting dish for breakfast or evening snack. I prepared this mo...

Onion Thool Bajji - Vengaya Thool Bajji - Evening Snack Recipes

Onion thool bajji - a simple and easy snack recipe with onions. Like onion pakoda, this onion thool bajji is a quite popular snack during season time in our hometown Courtallam. I enjoy munching this thool bajji after a nice bath at main falls during every season time. As it is prepared with onion slices with a soft texture it is named as thool bajji.  Now coming to the batter ingredients for the bajji. Besan flour is the main ingredient and in addition we add rice flour and dosa batter for the crisp texture. Making the batter with the correct consistency gives the perfect shape and texture. Both vazhaikkai bajji and onion thool bajji have pretty much the same ingredients, but the water ratio is different and the way of frying too. Onions get cooked easily, so always deep fry them on medium heat and transfer it before the bubble ceases. You don't need to plan much for this thool bajji and you can make it easily for unexpected guests or for any unplanned occasions.  Check out m...

Pazham Pori - Nenthram Pazham Pori - Quick Evening Snack

Nenthram Pazham Pori is an instant evening snack and it just needs 4 ingredients and 20 minutes to prepare it. A traditional snack of Kerala and also in Nanjil cuisine.  I have tasted this very long time ago in a tea shop at Malamupuzha dam. Later, after discussing this recipe with my Rema athai, she shared the recipe with me. She used to prepare these pazham pori regularly, at least twice or thrice a month as evening snacks. The main ingredients used to make this pazham pori are nenthram pazham, maida, rice flour, sugar and cardamom powder. This pazham pori can also be made with wheat flour but you won't get the exact taste of it. Now a days nenthram pazhams are available throughout the year  and you can try this anytime for your kids. Few years ago, I tried this pazham pori for Aval Vikatan Nanjil recipes, but forgot to take the videos. I actually wanted to post it along with the video and yesterday tried it with just 2 nenthram pazham and it turned out very well and we all ...

Karasev with Green chilly - Pachai Milagai Karasev - Diwali Recipes

Karasev recipe with full video and step by step pictures. Generally, most of us use red chilly powder or black pepper powder for karasev for spiciness. In this recipe, I have used green chilly, which gives a pale yellow colour for the karasev. The taste and texture was really good. I learnt this recipe from my Sarasu perimma who is an expert in making savouries and traditional sweets. She taught me few savouries and I will post one by one in virundhombal. She told me using red chilly powder will give dark colour karasev, so try karasev with green chillies. To make this karasev we need gram flour, rice flour, roasted gram flour(fried grams flour) green chillies, butter, asafoetida and oil.  Tips to make karasev Combine all the flour  and then add the butter. You can add hot oil or melted ghee. Mix well with your palm until the mixture is mixed well with the butter. The green chillies are ground with little salt and then filtered using a fine strainer. Do not add the ground gree...

Thattai - Crispy Snack with Rice Flour - Thattai with Rice Flour - Diwali Recipes

Thattai with rice flour - this thattai recipe is easy to make when compared to puzhungal arisi thattai. For Diwali I usually prepare puzhungal arisi thattai as they have nice crispy texture but it takes more time. Now a days many people don't prefer to spend hours and hours in the kitchen. There are plenty of quick, simple and tasty snacks you can make at home in less time. I will share  quick 30 minute snack recipes one by one in virundhombal. You can replace the packed chips with these homemade snacks without any overused oils, artificial colours and flavours.  This thattai is made with rice flour, urad dal flour, fried grams flour and flavoured with red chillies, garlic, asafoetida and curry leaves. We have to roast the rice flour for a few minutes until it is warm to handle. Roasting the rice flour helps to form a slightly stiff dough and it is easy to shape the rounds. When adding water be careful because if the dough has become watery, it will be difficult to prepare the...

ThattaPayaru( Karamani) Sundal - Black Eyed Peas Sundal

Karamani / Thattapayaru  Sundal - prepared with black eyed beans. The sundal is flavoured with a ground mixture made with green chilly, ginger, coriander leaves and coconut. For sundal dishes, I recommend the overnight  (6 to 8 hours)  soaking method because it is the easiest method and it is also easy to cook within 1 or  2 whistles. Cooking the beans or peas with soft texture makes them easily digestible too. For sundal dishes the beans should be tender but not mushy. The approximate cooking time for this thattapayiru is 1 or 2 whistles on medium heat. Allow 10 minutes for natural pressure release and drain the water immediately. If you forget to soak the beans overnight, soak in rapidly boiling hot water for 1 hour and pressure cook for 6 to 8 whistles. If the beans are not tender, once again pressure cook for 2 whistles. Adjust your cooking time according to your pressure cooker variety.  Similar Prasadam recipes Maa Vilakku Aval Payasam Rice Payasam Moong d...
