Pidi karunai kuzhambu (Yam) provides all the important nourishment to the body which not only improves the immunity system, but also brings a glow in the body. It is used as an Ayurvedic medicine to cure piles. It is high in Vitamin B6, and contains Vitamin C and A, potassium, phosphorous and magnesium. This pidi karunai masiyal is easy to make and tamarind juice is added to remove itchiness. A healthy and low calorie dish which goes well with rice. I learnt this recipe from my mom. For pulikuzhambu we prepare this masiyal as a side dish. Try this easy and healthy masiyal for your family.
Pidi Karunai Kizhangu (Yam) Masiyal - This pidi karunai masiyal is easy to make and tamarind juice is added to remove itchiness. A healthy and low calorie dish which goes well with rice.
1. Wash the karunai kizhangu(yams) in water until all the muds are completely removed. Then pressure cook them for 7 to 10 whistles.
2. Peel the skin and allow them to cool. Soak the tamarind in warm water and extract the pulp with 1/2 cup of water. Chop the small onions finely.
3. Grind the coconut, small onions, garlic and cumin coarsely. Mash the karunai kizhangu(yam) and add the extracted tamarind juice to it.
4. Now add the ground paste, turmeric powder and salt to the mashed karunai kizhangu. Gently mix them evenly with your hands.
5. Heat oil in a heavy bottomed kadai and add the mustard urid dal.When it splutters add the small onions and saute them till it turns brown.
6. Now add the chilly powder and curry leaves. Stir them well.
7. Stir them for a few seconds and add the mashed masalas and stir it continuously for few seconds.
8. Swirl 2 tbsp oil while roasting. Keep on low flame for 15 minutes and cook them till it turns brown.
9. Tasty and healthy masiyal is ready to serve.

- 1/2 cup small onions
- 1 tsp red chilly powder
- 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
- small lemon sized ball tamarind
- 3 - 5 tbsp tbsp gingely oil
- Salt to taste
To grind
- 1/2 cup coconut
- 4 small onions
- 2 garlic
- 1 tsp cumins
To temper
- 1/4 tsp mustard
- 1/4 tsp urid dal
- few curry leaves
